Are engagement photos really necessary? I think the idea of an engagement shoot is kind of silly.
An engagement session isn’t really necessary, but neither are most of the trappings of a modern wedding. You don’t need a fancy dress or a church or a reception hall and hundreds of guests. All you need to get married is a marriage license and a few minutes before a justice of the peace.
So, no, you don’t need engagement photos.
But if you want to have your wedding professionally photographed then, yes, an engagement session is a great idea. Here are three reasons why I think you’ll want professional engagement pictures.
One, an engagement session lets you and your fiancé get comfortable with each other in front of the camera. On your wedding day, you’ll spend a few hours being photographed. Having a chance to get acclimated to that experience can help you get better wedding pictures.
Two, you’ll get some important photos to commemorate this season of your relationship and your lives. If you choose classic clothing styles (avoid trendy stuff), your photographs can have a timeless quality to them. Get some prints and a few wall portraits to keep around your home and pass along to your children (and their children).
Third, an engagement session lets you get comfortable with your photographer—and this is one of the most important factors to getting good wedding pictures. You’ll get to learn how she works and how she can help pose you to look your best. When your wedding day comes around, you’ll be able to quickly get back into that groove (instead of having to learn it for the first time) to make great pictures.
If you’re going to spend the money to hire a professional wedding photographer, take the time to schedule an engagement session with her as well.
